Designing a Camper Van Bathroom: Making the Most of a Small Space

Adding a bathroom to a camper van can completely change the way you travel. Having a private space to shower, wash and get ready can make longer trips considerably more comfortable.

But designing a functional bathroom inside a camper van comes with a unique challenge: space is limited.

Modern custom camper van interior with a compact bathroom on the left, kitchenette on the right and rear bed overlooking a scenic landscape.

Unlike a bathroom in a home, every centimetre needs to be carefully considered. The layout, fixtures, plumbing, storage and ventilation all need to work together without making the rest of the van feel cramped.

At Vacanza Vans, bathroom design is approached as part of the overall camper van layout, rather than something added as an afterthought.

Start With the Available Space

The first consideration is always the space available within the particular van.

A bathroom needs enough room to use comfortably, but increasing its footprint can reduce the living, kitchen or storage space elsewhere in the vehicle.

This makes careful planning essential.

The position of the bathroom, doors, shower area and other fixtures needs to be considered alongside everything else being incorporated into the build.

Design Your Camper Van Bathroom Around How You Travel

There isn't one perfect camper van bathroom design.

Someone travelling occasionally on weekends may have very different requirements from someone spending several months on the road.

How often you'll use the shower, whether you need additional storage, and how

much living space you want available during the day can all influence the design.

A custom build gives you the opportunity to prioritise the things that matter most to you.

Make Every Centimetre Count

In a compact bathroom, wasted space quickly becomes noticeable.

Thoughtful design can make use of areas that might otherwise be overlooked,

while carefully selected fixtures can provide the functionality you need without overwhelming the room.

Storage is another important consideration. Toiletries, towels and other bathroom essentials need somewhere to live, but bulky storage can quickly make a small space feel even smaller.

The goal isn't simply to fit everything in. It's to make the space feel intuitive and comfortable to use.

Waterproofing and Moisture Management

A camper van bathroom needs to cope with regular exposure to water and moisture.

Waterproofing and appropriate finishes are therefore important considerations during the construction process. Protecting the surrounding cabinetry, flooring and vehicle interior helps prevent moisture from causing problems further down the track.

It's another reason why bathroom design needs to be considered from the beginning of a custom build.

Don't Forget Ventilation

Ventilation becomes particularly important in a small enclosed bathroom.

Showers introduce significant moisture into a confined space, so effective airflow can help manage condensation and humidity while keeping the bathroom fresher and more comfortable.

Ventilation also needs to work as part of the camper van's wider airflow strategy rather than being considered in isolation.

Choose Fixtures for the Space

Bathroom fixtures that work beautifully in a house aren't necessarily the best choice for a camper van.

Compact, practical fixtures can provide the functionality you need while leaving more room for movement and storage.

The same applies to taps, shower fittings, doors and other components. Every item needs to earn its place within the limited footprint.

Make the Bathroom Feel Like Part of the Van

A well-designed camper van bathroom shouldn't feel like a separate box that has been squeezed into the vehicle.

Materials, colours and finishes can be selected to complement the rest of the interior, creating a cohesive space that feels considered rather than compromised.

This is one of the advantages of designing a custom camper van from the ground up. The bathroom can be designed alongside the kitchen, cabinetry, electrical systems and living areas so that everything works together.

Small Space, Big Difference

A well-designed bathroom can add a significant level of comfort to a camper van, particularly for travellers spending extended periods on the road.

But creating one successfully requires more than simply finding somewhere to put a shower.

It requires careful consideration of space, functionality, water, ventilation, storage and the way the entire van will be used.

At Vacanza Vans, every custom camper van is designed around the individual owner's needs and the way they intend to travel. From the overall layout through to the smallest details, the aim is to make every part of the available space work harder without compromising comfort.

Because when space is limited, good design isn't about fitting more in. It's about making better use of what you have.
