Which Camper Van Layout Is Right for You?

The right camper van layout can make the difference between a van that looks great and one that genuinely works for the way you travel.

There’s no single layout that suits everyone. A couple travelling for months at a time will have very different priorities from someone taking weekend trips, while surfers, cyclists, families and solo travellers may all need completely different things from the same amount of space.

The key is to start with how you actually plan to use your van.

Choosing the Right Camper Van Layout Starts With How You Travel.

Before deciding where the bed, kitchen or storage should go, think about what you want your camper van to do.

Are you planning weekend escapes or extended trips? Will you mostly travel as a couple? Do you spend your days outdoors and simply need somewhere comfortable to sleep, or do you want your van to feel like a complete living space?

These questions can have a bigger impact on your camper van layout than the size of the vehicle itself.

A good custom layout should support your lifestyle rather than forcing you to adapt your lifestyle around the van.

Fixed Bed or Convertible Bed?

One of the biggest layout decisions is how you want to use your sleeping space.

A fixed bed gives you a dedicated sleeping area that's always ready to use. It can also provide valuable storage underneath, making it particularly practical for people carrying bulky outdoor equipment.

The trade-off is that a permanent bed takes up a significant amount of floor space.

A convertible bed can give you more flexible living space during the day.

Seating can become a bed when it's time to sleep, allowing one area of the van to serve multiple purposes.

This can work particularly well for shorter trips or people who prioritise daytime living space.

Neither option is inherently better. It depends on how you use the van.

How Important Is Your Kitchen?

Your kitchen requirements can also influence the entire layout.

Some travellers want a proper indoor kitchen with generous bench space, storage, a fridge and everything they need to prepare meals comfortably.

Others are happy with a smaller kitchen and prefer to spend most of their time cooking and eating outside.

If you're someone who loves cooking, a larger kitchen may be worth dedicating more of your available space to.

If you're usually outdoors, that same space might be better used for storage or living space.

The important thing is to consider how you'll actually use the kitchen rather than simply trying to fit the biggest one possible.

Do You Need a Bathroom?

A bathroom can add a significant amount of convenience to a camper van, particularly for longer trips.

But it also requires valuable floor space and needs to be considered alongside plumbing, water storage, ventilation and other systems.

For some travellers, having a shower and toilet inside the van is a priority.

For others, that space could be better used for a larger kitchen, additional storage or a more spacious living area.

This is one of those decisions where understanding your actual travel habits is more important than simply choosing the most features possible.

Think About What You Carry

Storage is another major consideration when planning a camper van layout.

If you're carrying surfboards, bikes, camping equipment, fishing gear or other bulky items, your layout needs to account for them from the beginning.

This can influence everything from under-bed storage to cabinetry and access points.

There's little benefit in having a beautiful interior if you have nowhere practical to put the things you actually take travelling.

Think about what you use regularly, what needs to be easily accessible and what can be stored away until you need it.

The best storage isn't necessarily the most storage. It's the storage that works for your lifestyle.

Travelling as a Couple? Think About How You'll Use the Space.

Travelling as a couple introduces another consideration: how you share the space.

Can one person cook while the other moves around the van? Can you both sit comfortably inside if the weather turns bad? Is there enough storage for two people? Can you access the bed without disturbing the other person?

These might sound like small considerations during the design stage, but they can become very noticeable once you're living in the van.

A good layout should make everyday movement feel natural rather than making two people constantly work around each other.

There Isn't One Perfect Camper Van Layout

Ultimately, the best camper van layout isn't necessarily the one with the biggest kitchen, largest bed or most features.

It's the one that makes the best use of the space for you.

A weekend traveller may prioritise an open living area and outdoor lifestyle. Someone travelling long-term may value a fixed bed, larger kitchen and bathroom. An adventure-focused traveller might sacrifice interior living space for generous equipment storage.

That's the advantage of a custom camper van.

Instead of starting with a fixed layout and trying to make your lifestyle fit around it, the design can begin with how you actually want to travel.

At Vacanza Vans, every build is custom designed around the individual vehicle and its owner. From sleeping arrangements and kitchen layouts to storage, bathrooms and living space, each element can be considered as part of the bigger picture.
